Overview of the Southeast Region Economic Forum 2017

This is the second time the Forum has been organized by the Business Forum Newspaper and People’s Committee of Southeastern Provinces. The program was attended by leaders from the Central Economic Commission, leaders of Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), leaders of provincial People’s Committees and representatives of some outstanding enterprises.

According to statistics from the Foreign Investment Agency, the Southeast region is considered the most dynamic economic region in the country in attracting foreign investment. By the end of 2016, its export turnover accounted for nearly 60% of the country. Calculating according to the economy opening level, measuring by the exports proportion to GDP, this region has an opening index of nearly 110% incomparison with only 70% of the whole country. Until now, there have been 12,000 projects with a total capital of over $ 145 billion in the region. It is expected that in the 2016-2020 period, the total FDI registered capital in the region will reach nearly $ 60 billion, accounting for more than 50% of the national foreign investment.

The Southeast region is a key economic region of the country with a lot of potentials in development links. Therefore, the linkage has been mentioned in this region for many years, but the current implementation appears to be relatively limited. Regional links are not merely a political expression but follow the market rules, on the basis of market flows as well.

The Southeast region has played a leading role in the national industrialization and modernization, making great contributions to the socio-economic development of the whole country, while its localities have a large source of revenue, but existing and future resources are facing obstacles to the development of quality growth such as infrastructure investment, population growth, interregional investment mechanism, etc.

Today, the society is witnessing an ever-widening situation of geographical boundaries. Therefore, there should be an increasing priority for resources and time to be invested with respect to interregional infrastructure projects. By this point, it is necessary for the infrastructure to meet the realities of regional and inter-regional scale expansion. Planning for technical infrastructure and social infrastructure with key projects is considered an important cornerstone and basis to leverage economic restructuring and real growth model transformation.

From these urgent issues, the Southeastern Economic Forum 2017 was taken place in three sessions with the following topics:

– Session 1: Economic restructuring & regional growth transformation.

– Session 2: Transport infrastructure planning – Interregional background.

– Session 3: Motivation mechanism for industry – trade – service development in particular and regional economy.

After the sessions of the Southeastern Economic Forum 2017, the Outstanding Enterprises in Southeast region 2017 ceremony was held with the attendance of 40 enterprises.
