In recent years, the cage aquaculture model using HDPE plastic material is bringing positive effects in improving productivity, limiting disease, especially well adapting to climate change.  HDPE cages have become a “savior” of fishermen and are encouraged to use by the Directorate of Fisheries.

Sustainable development in the application of advanced cage technology

According to the Project on Development of Marine Aquaculture in Vietnam of the Directorate of Fisheries on the application of advanced cage technology to limit risks in marine aquaculture, the Directorate of Fisheries has introduced the production technology of cage systems, equipment for marine aquaculture using HDPE new materials.

HDPE cages are being widely used in coastal provinces.

One of the main objectives of the project is to focus on converting marine aquaculture cages from traditional wooden cages to HDPE cages to meet climate change conditions, can be raised offshore, cages can withstand waves and high winds and are associated with sustainable marine environmental protection. This is considered a long-term development project to 2030, with a vision to 2045 in marine aquaculture; is a great effort of the Party, Government, State, scientists, businesses, and the Vietnam Seaculture Association in developing sustainable industrial marine aquaculture.

Mr. Tran Dinh Luan – Director of the Directorate of Fisheries (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) shared about the benefits of switching from wooden cage farming to HDPE cages. He affirmed, when farmers switch to HDPE cages, the durability of cages as well as resistance to climate change such as storms, waves and wind will be better than wooden cages. Along with that, farmers will minimize damage to aquaculture products when a storm hits.

The application of HDPE cages is bringing high production value to seafood farmers.

In addition, when localities change wood materials to HDPE materials, it will help protect the environment and protect forests better. When we use HDPE cages, it will help to put advanced equipment into the farming process, thereby achieving high and sustainable farming efficiency.

Currently, the model of HDPE plastic aquaculture cages has brought outstanding economic benefits to people, typically in some provinces such as Quang Ninh, Phu Yen, Nghe An, Khanh Hoa, Nha Trang, and Kien Giang., BA Ria Vung Tau, … This model will be further replicated and developed when both ensuring economic benefits, adapting to climate change, as well as helping marine aquaculture develop long-term and sustainably.
